Each guide on this site follows the same rules. They exist so you can trust a step before you add a chemical or open a panel.
One problem per guide
A guide answers one problem, written the way people describe it: “pool pump humming but not running”, not “pump issues”. If your problem looks different, it gets its own guide with its own checks.
Numbers come from the source
Chemistry ranges, such as free chlorine and pH, come from public health documents like the CDC’s Model Aquatic Health Code and from test kit makers. Equipment steps, part names and numbers, such as filter pressure or heater settings, come from the maker’s owner’s manual, service manual or installation guide. Each guide lists the documents it used under “Sources” at the end. When manuals disagree between models, we say which units a step applies to.
Cheapest check first
We order the checks by cost and effort. Testing the water, cleaning the filter, opening valves and resetting a GFCI come before new parts. A lot of pool and hot tub problems start with low flow or low sanitizer, so those checks show up in many guides.
Clear stop points
Some work is not a DIY job. Each guide says where to stop and call a pro, for example:
- You smell gas near a pool heater, or the heater shows scorch marks
- A GFCI trips again right after you reset it, or wiring looks wet or burned
- A repair means opening a gas valve, a burner tray or a sealed motor
- Chemicals have been mixed by mistake, or someone breathed in fumes
Short answer at the top
Every guide starts with a short answer that names the most likely causes and the first checks. If you only have a minute, the top of the page tells you where to look.
How we use AI tools
We use AI tools to help research, draft and format guides. They do not decide what a step says. Every step and number is checked against the documents listed in the sources before the guide goes live, and a guide without sources is not published.
Updates and corrections
When a reader reports a mistake or a maker changes a part, we fix the guide and change its “Updated” date. You can report a problem through the contact page. Please include whether it is a pool or a hot tub and the brand and model of the part.
