Short answer

An inflatable hot tub that will not heat is often just slow: Intex and SaluSpa heaters add only about 2 to 3 F per hour, and cold air, wind, bubbles or an open cover slow that more. If the temperature has not moved after 4 to 5 hours, or a flow code like Intex E90 or Bestway E02 shows, clean or replace the cartridge, check the water level and stopper caps, then reset. Too-hot or too-cold codes lock the heater out until the water is back in range.

Pick your symptom

Your inflatable hot tub will not heat, shows an E code, or looks soft in the morning, or your above-ground pool’s filter pump has stopped moving water. Most inflatable hot tub problems come from low water flow through a small pump, cold air, a dirty cartridge, or air pressure that changes with the temperature. This page covers Intex PureSpa, Bestway Lay-Z-Spa and Coleman SaluSpa tubs, plus Intex and Bestway pool filter pumps.

How does an inflatable hot tub work?

An inflatable spa keeps all its equipment in one pump unit beside the tub.

  1. Inflated walls. An air pump fills the walls. Bestway notes the pressure changes between day and night, so you top it up now and then.
  2. Filter. Water leaves the tub through filter cartridges on the outlet and flows into the pump unit.
  3. Flow sensors. The unit confirms water is moving before the heater turns on. No flow brings up a code, such as E90 on Intex or E02 on Bestway.
  4. Heater. A small heater warms the water about 2 to 3 F per hour on Intex and SaluSpa tubs and stops at 104 F.
  5. Temperature checks. Sensors lock the heater out if the water is too cold or too hot, and a thermal cut-out stops an overheating heater.
  6. Bubbles. A blower pushes air through the floor. On the SaluSpa it shuts off by itself after 30 minutes.
  7. GFCI plug. A GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) built into the plug cuts power if current leaks to ground. Coleman says to test it before each use.

Which inflatable hot tub parts fail, and what are the signs?

Part What it does Sign it is failing
Filter cartridge Traps dirt before the pump Flow code, slow heating, cloudy water
Flow sensor Proves water is moving Flow code while water is moving, or a code that clears after a firm tap on the pump’s side
Heater and thermal cut-out Heats the water and shuts off if too hot No temperature change 4 to 5 hours after heating starts
Temperature sensor Reads the water temperature A too-hot or too-cold code when the water feels normal
Bubble blower Makes the massage bubbles Bubbles stop and will not restart until the blower cools
Liner and air valve Hold the air and water Walls go soft, or soapy water bubbles at the valve
GFCI plug Cuts power on a ground fault It trips without TEST being pressed, or it fails the test

What should I check first when an inflatable hot tub will not heat?

  • GFCI plug. Press TEST, then RESET. If it trips by itself, unplug the tub and stop there.
  • Cover. Keep the cover on whenever the heater runs. Bestway says an open tub takes longer to heat.
  • Filter cartridge. Rinse or replace it. Intex suggests a test run without the cartridge: if the flow code clears, the cartridge was the problem.
  • Water level and caps. Fill between the MIN and MAX lines, and remove the stopper caps from the inside ports after setup. Bestway lists forgotten caps as a cause of its no-flow code.
  • Air temperature. Intex says heating slows below 50 F air, in strong wind, or with the bubbles on. The SaluSpa cut-out trips above 122 F air or in direct sun.
  • Reset button. On Bestway pumps, if the temperature has not changed 4 to 5 hours after heating starts, press RESET with a thin object and restart the heater.
  • Air pressure. Top up soft walls. Brush soapy water on the valve to find a leak.

Safety first. Test the GFCI plug before each use, plug it straight into a grounded outlet, and never bury the cord. Unplug the pump before any cleaning or maintenance. Do not run the bubbles with the cover on; Coleman warns trapped air can cause damage and injury. Keep the water at 104 F or below. CDC says children under 5 should not use hot tubs.

Inflatable hot tub numbers to know

These numbers come from Intex’s and Bestway’s own manuals and support files. Check the manual for your model too.

Spec Intex PureSpa Bestway (Lay-Z-Spa, Coleman SaluSpa)
Maximum water temperature 104 F 104 F
Heating rate 2 to 3 F per hour; first heat-up can take up to 20 hours 2 to 3 F per hour on the SaluSpa Tahiti
Time to reach 104 F (US 120V SaluSpa, cover on) See your model’s manual About 20 hours from 68 F water and air; about 32 hours from 50 F
No-flow code E90 E02 (E01 is a stuck flow sensor)
Too-cold limit E94 means the water is too cold Will not run with water below 40 F; fill water must be above 42.8 F
Too-hot code E95: let the water cool to 104 F or below, then reset the GFCI Water over 119 F on the SaluSpa; restart at 100 F or lower
Spa filter cartridge Replace every 1 to 2 weeks Check and clean daily; change weekly
Pool filter pump cartridge Krystal Clear: replace at least every 2 weeks Flowclear: replace every 2 weeks

Intex vs Bestway: what changes when you troubleshoot?

Intex makes PureSpa. Bestway makes Lay-Z-Spa and builds the Coleman SaluSpa under license, so those two share pump designs and codes. Intex codes sit in the E80s and E90s: E90 is no flow, E94 too cold, E95 too hot, E97 a heater fault (current Intex manuals call it dry-fire protection; an older Intex FAQ calls it a heater fuse error), and E98 means the water or the air around the unit hit 131 F. Bestway’s most common codes are E01 to E05: E01 is the flow sensor, E02 no flow, E03 too cold, E04 too hot and E05 a sensor connection fault. Its manuals also list E08 (thermal cut-out), and Lay-Z-Spa’s support pages cover codes up to E19.

Resets differ too. Intex clears most codes when you unplug the GFCI and plug it back in; Bestway pumps have a RESET button. Bestway’s UK pages and US manuals word some codes differently, so trust the manual for your model. US 120V models heat slower: from 68 F, Bestway lists about 20 hours for the 120V SaluSpa and 11.5 hours for a 230V Lay-Z-Spa. Order parts by the model number on the pump.

Above-ground pool filter pumps. Intex’s Krystal Clear manual says a pump that will not start is unplugged, on a tripped GFCI, or shut off by a hot motor. If it runs but moves no water, look for low water, a clogged strainer or cartridge, an air leak at the hose nuts, or swapped hoses. Bestway says never to run its Flowclear pump dry: both pool ports must be under water. For bigger pools, see our pool pump guide.

When should you call a pool or spa pro?

  • The GFCI trips on its own. Bestway says to stop using the pump and have it repaired. Intex says a breaker that trips again and again can mean a fault in your home wiring, which needs an electrician.
  • A code that keeps coming back. If a flow code survives a new cartridge and a flush, or E97 returns after a reset, contact the maker with your model and serial number.
  • Leaks a patch cannot close. Bestway includes a repair patch for small tears and punctures. For anything bigger, contact the maker.

Local techs bill by the visit or the hour, so call the maker first while under warranty. For foam or cloudy water, see our hot tub water guide.

Common questions

How do I reset the heater on my inflatable hot tub?

On Bestway Lay-Z-Spa and Coleman SaluSpa pumps, unplug the pump, press RESET with a thin object, plug it back in and turn the heater on. On Intex PureSpa, most codes reset when you unplug the GFCI, plug it back in and reset it. Intex’s E98 code also uses a reset button on the control unit.

Why is my inflatable hot tub not heating up?

It may simply be slow: Intex and SaluSpa heaters add only about 2 to 3 F per hour, and cold air, wind, bubbles and an open cover slow that further. If nothing changes after 4 to 5 hours, check the cartridge and flow, then reset. A too-cold or too-hot code locks the heater out until the water is back in range.

How do I reset a SaluSpa or Lay-Z-Spa, and where is the reset button?

The thermal reset button is on the side of the pump on models that have one. Lay-Z-Spa says to unplug for about 10 seconds, reset the plug, hold On/Off for 3 seconds, press the thermal reset, then press the heater button. On models without the button, unplug for 10 to 20 minutes, then reconnect and repeat the same steps.

Why is my Intex or Bestway pool pump not pumping?

Intex’s manual lists an airlock, a clogged cartridge or strainer, low water, an air leak at the hose nuts, and swapped hoses. Open the air release valve until water comes out, then close it. Clean the cartridge and tighten the hose nuts. If the motor will not start, check the GFCI and let a hot motor cool.

Should you run your above-ground pool pump all the time?

No. Intex’s manual gives a daily run time for each pool size, and its built-in timer runs 1 to 12 hours per cycle. With a saltwater system, the filter pump should run 1 hour longer than the salt system.

What is the average lifespan of an above-ground pool?

Intex and Bestway do not publish a lifespan for their pools or pumps. Bestway’s Flowclear manual gives a 360-day warranty on the motor pump. Bestway says proper storage protects the PVC and extends the life of its products, so follow the storage steps at the end of each season.
